I Tried AG1 For Two Weeks—Here's My Honest Review (2)
  • 75 vitamins, minerals, and whole-food sourced nutrients in one serving
  • Formulated without added sugars
  • Contains prebiotics and probiotics
  • Optimized for athletes, lifeletes, and everyone in between
  • Backed by our Scientific Advisory Board
  • Gluten-free, peanut-free and dairy-free

ProsCons
  • Ease of use: A scoop is provided in the supplement bag so it can easily be added to water or a liquid of choice.
  • NSF Certified for Sport: This third-party certification ensures what is on the label is in the bottle—and the product doesn’t contain unsafe levels of contaminants, prohibited substances or masking agents.
  • The taste: One scoop of AG1 in water was tough for me to swallow. Even in a smoothie, it had an unpleasant, powdery mouthfeel.
  • The multitude of ingredients: It’s not the fact that there are so many ingredients, but many of these ingredients interact with specific medications or are contraindicated in a variety of populations (for example, while using sedatives, ashwagandha may increase their effects).
  • The many health claims: The company claims that AG1 helps support energy, immunity, gut health, hormonal and neural support and healthy aging, among other benefits, according to its website. However, with the plethora of ingredients in this product, it’s tough to determine if they synchronously work to be that effective. Research may be found on the benefits of individual ingredients—but not on the entire blend.

How Does AG1 Work?

To use AG1, mix one scoop of the AG1 mixture into 8 ounces of water. The company recommends taking it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. If you don’t want to mix it with water, you can mix it with juice, milk or in a smoothie. The only thing the company advises against is mixing AG1 with hot or highly acidic liquids, as this could affect the integrity and efficacy of some of the ingredients.

While the company recommends taking one scoop per day, it also notes that for short-term periods of high stress or exertion, two servings can be taken (and touted to provide a noticeable difference). Once the package is opened, it needs to be refrigerated and used within 90 days.

How Much Does AG1 Cost?

The AG1 Supplement

One of the most interesting things about AG1 is how many ingredients they actually put into it. There are 75 ingredients, with the most prominent including:

  • Vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, C, E, B12, biotin, folate and more
  • A raw superfood complex consisting of organic spirulina, lecithin, organic apple powder, inulin, organic wheat grass juice powder, organic alfalfa powder, organic chlorella powder and more
  • Extracts and herbs like alkaline pea protein isolate, citrus bioflavonoids extract, rhodiola, milk thistle seed extract, ashwagandha root extract and more
  • Digestive enzymes and a super mushroom complex
  • Dairy-free probiotics

The Fine Print

The company notes that although uncommon, a small percentage of new users may experience a temporary upset stomach, which resolves for most after a few days of consistent use. Some people may need to build up to taking one full scoop of AG1.

The AG1 Experience

After placing an order on the AG1 website, a bag of AG1 arrived within a few days. There was a note in the box (in addition to an email I received) that recommended taking one scoop of AG1 in 8 ounces of water—so that is what I did.

However, I couldn’t drink it because the taste and how it felt in my mouth were terrible (keep in mind, though, taste is subjective). The second day, I opted to mix the powder into a smoothie made with one small individual container of Greek yogurt, one-third cup of 100% pomegranate juice and frozen strawberries. Although the color of the smoothie wasn’t very appealing, and it was still gritty from the scoop of powder, I was able to easily ingest it.

Own Your Health, Own Your Day

75 vitamins, minerals, whole-food sourced superfoods, probiotics, and adaptogens in one daily serving of AG1.

Over the course of the two weeks I went to my regular Orange Theory class three to five times a week, but didn’t feel any different, and I didn’t necessarily have more energy than usual. As a registered dietitian, I was also concerned about the variety of ingredients in the supplement, as some interact with medications I am taking (while I’m in pretty good health, it’s important to keep in mind that you can still have an interaction with common medications, like birth control pills).

In fact, many of the adaptogens in AG1 interact with medications—such as dandelion, which interacts with numerous medications including diabetic medications, lithium, diuretics and certain antibiotics. I could not find a warning or caution listed on the website, so check with your medical doctor or registered dietitian before starting this supplement. Note that the company does state that it does not recommend taking AG1 if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without first consulting your doctor.

I actually felt happy when I stopped taking it, as I felt I was putting unnecessary ingredients in my body.
